Private aviation has an excellent safety record, but standards are not identical across every operator. Before you board, it pays to know who is actually flying you and how they are regulated. At YouJet, safety and compliance are at the heart of what we do, and these are the checks we make on every flight.
1. A valid Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
Commercial charter flights must be operated by a company holding an AOC issued by a national aviation authority, such as Transport Malta or the UK CAA under EASA or equivalent rules. Beware of “grey charter”, where a privately owned aircraft is illegally hired out without an AOC. It can leave you without valid insurance.
2. Insurance and liability cover
Check that the operator carries adequate passenger liability and hull insurance for the aircraft and the countries being flown to.
3. Crew experience and training
Ask about crew hours on type, recurrent simulator training and duty-time limits. Well-rested, current crews are one of the most important safety factors.
4. Maintenance and aircraft history
Aircraft must be maintained by approved maintenance organisations under a continuing airworthiness programme. Age alone is not a safety indicator; maintenance standards are.
5. Safety management and independent audits
Strong operators run a Safety Management System (SMS) and are often audited by independent bodies such as IS-BAO, ARGUS or Wyvern. We look for these as a mark of a mature safety culture.
6. Security and dangerous goods
Professional operators screen passengers and baggage appropriately and will ask you about lithium batteries, medicines and other restricted items. This is a good sign, not an inconvenience.
